What Are Some Ways to Discover New Music?

If there’s one thing that struggling musicians and people who are very much into music share is an interest in discovery. The struggling musicians want to be where people go to find new artists to listen to. The music aficionados are always looking for new places where they can hunt for artists whose work resonates with them.

Thanks to the internet, it’s not that hard to find new music or find places where people can find your music. Thanks to the services such as Spotipromotion.com, even the struggling artists have a chance for better visibility on streaming services, to the benefit of themselves as well as the audiences that might enjoy their music. So, let’s see where people could go to find new music.

Check the Lists

Every self-respecting music magazine, and more than a few that don’t deal primarily with music, have their “Best of” lists. Sometimes, these lists will show you the best albums that have been released within a year in a particular genre. Other times, these lists will resemble a list of albums you should listen to before you kick the proverbial bucket.

Either way, if someone has gone through all the trouble of compiling it, chances are that at least some of the entries could pique your interest. Overall, we’re talking here about a mix of blogs, music websites, and industry staples that have grown to become institutions. So think about Pitchfork, Billboard 200, the Rolling Stone, and a host of lesser-known blogs.

Listen to the Radio

The term “radio-friendly” has changed just as the nature of radio has changed; or at least, it should have. Because thanks to the online radio stations, you can find all kinds of music in the air that weren’t “formatted” properly before. It’s a brave new world, this internet thing, and there’s no end to what you can do with it.

You can easily find radio stations that will expose you to new sounds online. You can look for clips from their live sessions on YouTube if that’s what you like. But for the more traditional experience, do an internet search on KEXP, KCRW, and even BBC Radio 6.

Try the Platforms

You shouldn’t be wary of giving platforms a try when trying to find something new to listen to. A lot of them have built-in options to help you discover new music. Whether it’s specific playlists from their editors, or features like Deezer’s flow that let an algorithm choose the music for you based on your likes, there’s plenty of things you can discover there.

That’s even without mentioning the platforms such as Bandcamp. If you find an artist you like and you’d want to support, their Bandcamp should be the first place to visit. Soundcloud is another great platform where you can find new music, and Mixcloud is one of the rare platforms where you can listen to DJ sets completely legally. And that’s just scratching the surface.

There are plenty of different places where a music lover can find their new favorite band, or where a band can find their biggest fan. We haven’t even mentioned the obvious ones like the social network and video platforms, but you get the drift — if there’s a place that allows posting of content, you’ll be able to find music there. Or, you’ll be able to upload your music, if you’re on that side of the aisle.
