Implementing several basic safety features when living alone is vital to living in peace. Develop good habits when at home to enhance your safety, and when leaving or re-entering the house. Remain constantly aware of what is taking place around you.

Note suspicious activity, and take precautions to improve your safety. The world has become more dangerous and living alone can be quite scary, so it is vital that you take as many steps as possible to protect yourself.

Install a security system

Not all single people can afford the luxury of installing a comprehensive security system. Fortunately, there are other options available to support living in safety. Contact a local security provider and ask whether they provide a basic service that includes a panic button

Having a panic button will allow you to call security services for assistance when you feel threatened in any way. A basic push of the button will send an alarm signal to the base station, alerting personnel that you need assistance.

Spy Phone app

Install a spy phone app on your phone and friends' phones so that you can quickly alert someone when in danger. The spy phone app can be installed in seconds. It can be used to track and store activity, and it can also be used for GPS tracking. This app is an excellent way to trace locations and to track contacts.

Best yet, it has a panic button to alert friends that you need help urgently. Use every possible help that you can to protect yourself when you live alone. You're in a vulnerable position, so the more help you can access, the safer you will be.

Install your own security system

Cheap sensors can be purchased online. These sensors and cameras can be installed at strategic points around the home. They are typically wireless and can be connected to your PC.

Monitor external activity from inside your home, and you can call on your established contacts for assistance if you feel this is necessary. Installing a doorbell camera will provide a similar sense of safety.

This device is cost-effective and also videos and records all activity at your front door. With this device in place, you can always check your PC before opening the front door and opening yourself up to risk.

Find a neighborhood watch

Contact neighbors to find out if there is an informal neighborhood watch system in operation. Some neighborhoods have volunteers who patrol streets at night and alert the police to any suspicious activity.

If you contact them, you can obtain their cell phone numbers and a roster to check who is on duty throughout the week. They are a lot closer than the police and will be able to get to you quicker. Knowing that you have someone to call for help will help you sleep easier, and provide a solution in time of need.

Also get a list of the names and contact numbers of immediate neighbors to strengthen your safety. A mutual exchange of details will help to preserve security in the neighborhood.

Think like a criminal

Consider what strategy you would use to break into your home. Once you've figured out several strategies, make a plan to strengthen the weak points of access to your home. This may be the entrance and exit doors, windows or bushes around the home that create convenient hiding places.

Consider what your action plan will be if someone does break into your home. If alerted soon enough, where will you hide? Do you have a lock on your bedroom door or an accessible weapon to defend yourself while waiting for someone to respond to your panic button or phone call?
